Japanese class for mothers and their infants ages 0 to 18 months. Through songs and Japanese hand play, we help mothers build strong bonds with their tots. We also read children’s picture books in a relaxing environment. Fathers are welcomed.

For moms and their babies 0-18 months.

Playgroup

July 6, 2010 ~ September 18, 2010

Learning the Japanese language and culture through everyday activities. Activities include: open play, hand song play, music, cultural games and crafts and storytime.

This spring/summer drop your children off for playgroup and take this time to catch up on shopping,
meet friends or simply relax! Moms, Dads and caregivers do not need to stay!
(see below for age restrictions).

No previous experience with Japanese required. All activities are held in Japanese.
Staff is certified in Pediatric First Aid and CPR.

NEW PLAYGROUP POLICIES:
1. Anyone attending a TRIAL playgroup may join for the first hour of playgroup. Tues/Thurs. 9:30-10:30, Thurs 2:30-3:30, Sat 10-11.
2. All TRIALS must be registered in advance. No walk-in trials will be accepted. Space available: Tues/Thurs 2 spaces, Sat 1 space.
3. Walk-in space is only available for current clients. If you have not attended in more than one month, you must register in advance.
4. Under age 3 is allowed for drop off based on discretion of Staff. Children develop differently, so if Staff observes that a 2 year old is well adjusted and ready to join group without a caregiver present then that child may be dropped off. If 2 1/2 year old child is not ready, then Staff may ask the caregiver to remain at group.

Hiragana Play & Practice

September 10, 2010 ~ November 12, 2010

(Make up class offered on 11/19)

We have combined our introductory and intermediate classes to address each child’s specific skill level. Children ages 3.5-5years will arrive early for introduction/review of hiragana recongition with games and play. After-school children ages 5-7 years will practice writing while building vocabulary. This class is taught by Yuko sensei and (2) assistant teachers.

The class will also reinforce cultural knowledge and spoken language with songs and games.

Each class will build on material from previous class so regular attendance is highly recommended.

Ages 5-7 years: 3:30pm-5pm

Daycare

Our new daycare program offers the ultimate immersion into the Japanese language and culture!

Tuesday and Thursday mornings the daycare kids will be joined by Playgroup kids for an activity packed morning of games, crafts, songs, reading and music.

Daily activities include: outside play at the local playground, singing, music & movement, games, quiet/nap time, story time with puppet play, on-going crafts and art projects following traditional cultural themes and using art/crafts to introduce science through nature and our local environment. Staff uses books, toys, games and songs to teach life skills and Japanese customs. The program also includes Japanese breakfast, morning and afternoon snacks, and Japanese barley tea and water (please bring lunch).

Weekly activities include yoga and karate taught in Japanese: these organized physical activities will help strengthen mind and body while building confidence and supporting a healthy lifestyle. The classes are taught by native Japanese instructors: Nobue sensei (yoga) and Honma sensei (karate).

To strengthen the mind children will enjoy weekly lessons in hiragana, using games, toys and other visual aids to introduce, practice and advance reading and writing basic kana. For those who complete the hiragana, they may move onto katakana and basic kanji. Our writing groups are taught by our resident hoikuen teacher from Japan.

Those who have not attended any of our current groups, please attend a trial playgroup. If you decide to register after attending a trial, the trial fee of $15 will be deducted from your registration fee.

Summer Program July- August 2011

Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9am to 5pm join us for 8 hours of Japanese! Activities include arts & crafts, music, story time, yoga, trips to the local playground, games and educational activities (telling time, weather, greetings, counting and hiragana). Japanese breakfast and snacks are included!*

Ages 3-5years

Brooklyn Music & Movement

Our new Brooklyn toddler group includes games, rhythm and exercise with paino accompaniment, Japanese hand play songs and cultural activity.

Ages 2-3years with parent or caregiver.

Fall schedule: 1st & 3rd Wednesday of September and October.

Wednesday 10:00am-10:45am $60 ($15x4)

Advance registration is required by Monday, August 30th.

Minimum registration is 5. Group will be cancelled if registration is less than 5 children. This group will be offered again for November-December. ** If class is cancelled due to low registration we will issue a FULL REFUND.

Brooklyn Mommy & Me

This Brooklyn meeting of our Mommy class follows the same format as our Manhattan class!

Through songs, Japanese hand play, and reading we help mothers build strong bonds with their tots. Moms learn easy make-at-home crafts and tips on making songs and books more interactive for their babies. Fathers are welcomed.

Moms and their babies 3-18 months.

Fall schedule: 1st & 3rd Wednesday of September and October.

Wednesday 11:45am-12:30pm $60 ($15x4)

Advance registration is required by Monday, August 30th.

Brooklyn Writing Workshop

Our new monthly writing workshop is designed and taught by Japanese hoikuen teacher, Yuko sensei. The class, made up of two parts: play and practice, will focus on teaching hiragana, katakana and/or kanji through vocabulary building activities.

Levels will be separated during writing exercises and students will be given practice packets to work on at home in between workshops.

Please bring nutritious snack for your child (no sweets please) and a drink in a plastic bottle. No glass bottles or juice boxes please.

This class is taught in Japanese only.

Ages 4-8years.

Fall schedule: September 18th and October 16th

Saturday 1:30pm-4:30pm $90 ($45x2)

Advance registration required by Friday, September 10th.
